Architectural Design I
Architecture design is a dynamic and multifaceted discipline that goes beyond the mere creation of structures; it is a holistic process that combines art, science, and functionality to shape the built environment. Into the world of architecture design, exploring its rich history, the interplay between creativity and functionality, and the contemporary challenges that drive innovation in the field. Through a lens that encompasses both the artistic and practical aspects of design, we embark on a journey to understand how architecture shapes the world we live in
Project 1:Geometry and Form: Architectural Design Elements & Principles
In this project, I need to explore different approaches of generating ideas through rigorous design processes through primary elements and ordering principles. This design project introduces basic understanding of design elements and principles, processes and approaches in generating ideas, developing design and translating it into form in a workshop based exploratory studio.
Through this project, I learnt to produce design concepts through the process of exploring various sources and abstracting ideas and demonstrate satisfactory manual drawing and model-making skills to represent and communicate the design.
Project 2: : Structure and Body: Materials, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration
For Project 2, we are going to design and construct a 1:1 structure for a specific activity, in groups. The structure will be placed in a real dormant green space to activate its use. We will be working with bamboo and be required to understand the nature and characteristics of the material and demonstrate basic knowledge in construction. We will explore construction details, e.g. joints, joinery and structural quality with other supporting materials (rope, steel, tensile fabric). We are to develop your design through a series of workshops, tests and investigations involving scaled study models, exploring architectural elements and principles and incorporating anthropometry and ergonomics into our 1:1 structure.
Through the project, we learnt to relate the idea of the individual ‘self’ and the body’ to space and its experiential qualities and stablish a basic level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design.
Project 3: Space and Sensory: Self - Exploration through Spaces
In this Project, I re-examine my model from Project 1 and develop it into a series of sensorial spaces with a total volumetric boundaries of 30m³ anticipating user’s journey, experience and emotion. This project is been explored into three stages, that is re-explore and re-examine my model from Project 1 and develop a spatial narrative, translate the spatial narrative into an architectural journey of path-portal-place and develop the sensorial experience of “path-portal-place”, guided by design principles, structure, materiality, anthropometry, ergonomics and architectural narrative via multiple test models and drawings.
Through this project, I learnt to produce design concepts through the process of exploring various sources and abstracting ideas and identify key architectural design elements and principles and employ them in creating an architectural composition that demonstrates space-making by establish a basic level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design and demonstrate satisfactory manual drawing and model-making skills to represent and communicate the design.
Reflection
The learning journey in architecture design reveals a profound exploration into the intricate interplay of creativity, technical expertise, and contextual awareness. From the inception of this educational endeavor, it became evident that architecture design is not merely about constructing physical structures but is a nuanced art form that embraces the symbiosis of aesthetics, functionality, and societal impact. Learning architecture design has been transformative, evolving from an appreciation of the aesthetics to a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted role architects play in shaping the world. It has fostered a mindset that values both the timeless principles of design and the ever-evolving nature of the field, paving the way for a continued exploration and contribution to the dynamic realm of architecture.
